Boss Sounds fondly remembers Amy Winehouse

We were saddened to hear about the passing of Amy Winehouse. The world was definitely a more interesting place with her in it. She also forged some cool links to the subculture we all love here at Boss Sounds Brisbane.

I always really rated the Amy Winehouse Ska EP. It contained cover versions of  Specials' "Monkey Man", "Hey Little Rich Girl" and "You're Wondering Now" as well as a Ska cover of Sam Cooke's "Cupid". Amy's version of "Hey Little Rich Girl" is awesome and I played it often in my DJ sets. There is also a bootleg of Amy covering the Specials "Nelson Mandela" at his 90's Birthday Celebration concert which also featured the Special's Jerry Dammers  and the Soweto Gospel Choir which I have yet to check out.

Fred Perry's Amy Winehouse collection was also pretty cool. LJ has both of the above polos from it.

So to close off, check out this cool mash-up by Party Ben of Rehab and the Four Tops' "I can't help myself" as we at Boss Sounds Brisbane fondly remember Amy.

Postscript :
Apparently there are a bunch of unreleased reggae songs that Amy recorded when she stayed at Bob Marley's estate and worked with Damein Marley. It would be great to see these songs released in the future. http://www.twentyfourbit.com/post/89416725/island-records-rejects-winehouses-reggae-album

Poly Styrene from X-Ray Spex 1976 Reggae Single

2011 sadly saw the passing away of Poly Styrene, the lead singer of the Punk band X-Ray Spex. I was a big fan of their album "Germ Free Adolescents". When I was reading Poly Styrene's eulogy in the newspaper I was surprised to find out that before X-Ray Spex, Poly recorded a reggae single. The song was called "Silly Billy" and it was released under the name "Mari Elliott" in 1976. It's a catchy little tune ... check it out ...

The Boss Sounds Blog is up and running ...

We have kicked off our Ska, Soul and Reggae DJ nights again. Last night we checked out the Corner Bar at the Step Inn last night. It's a cool little room. There are  turntables for vinyl records and the also have TV screens so we can show Subculture and Cult movies and videos.

LJ has made up this cool little logo to start us off.
